The training in MMA is to train a fighter offensively as well as defensively.  Training includes the skills of punching, kicking, and using the tools of a stand up strike. The defensive fighter turns an aggressive attack to their advantage, and learns through experience how to not succumb to the opponents strike. Ground fighting is when the challenge goes to the ground and one must be trained in what is called grappling. It is highly beneficial in an MMA ring to have strong grappling techniques to win the fight on the ground along with the ability to continue with effective strikes.
